What to check before hiring a credit-repair company

Identity, contract, payment terms and cancellation rights should be clear before work begins.

Verify the business

Confirm the legal name, physical or service location, contact channels and the states where the business says it operates. Ask which rules apply in your state.

Read before signing

The FTC explains that covered credit-repair services have federal contract, disclosure, payment-timing and cancellation requirements.

  • Reject guarantees of deletions, scores, loans or funding.
  • Ask what work will be performed and when.
  • Keep the complete agreement and cancellation notice.
  • Never provide account passwords through an ordinary contact form.
