Identity Theft Credit Recovery Checklist

Recovery is a documented sequence: report the theft, name the fraudulent information, secure the file, and preserve every receipt.

Create the official recovery record

Use IdentityTheft.gov to report genuine identity theft and generate a recovery plan. List each fraudulent account or transaction accurately; do not include legitimate debts or use identity-theft procedures as a general credit-repair tactic.

Prepare the blocking request

CFPB guidance describes a package including an identity-theft report, proof of identity, and a letter identifying the fraudulent debts or information. Follow each reporting company's submission requirements and keep the records secure.

  • Official identity-theft report
  • Identity proof
  • Fraudulent-item list
  • Request letter
  • Delivery receipt

Protect against new activity

Consider a credit freeze and monitor reports and account notices. A freeze limits legitimate access too, so record how to lift it when needed. Change compromised credentials directly with the relevant institutions and use a live authorized person for sensitive help.

Common questions

Clear answers, clear limits.

How quickly must fraudulent information be blocked?

CFPB guidance describes a four-business-day block after a reporting company receives the required request and documentation, subject to legal conditions and exceptions.

Is a freeze the same as an identity-theft block?

No. A freeze limits access to the file; a block concerns identified information resulting from identity theft.

Can I send identity documents through public chat?

No. Use only a verified secure process authorized for sensitive documents.
